Roulette is one of the most popular casino games, known for its simplicity and the possibility of winning large amounts of money. Having first appeared in France in the 18th century, roulette quickly gained popularity around the world. The main objective of the game is to correctly predict which number or colour the ball on the roulette wheel will stop at. In this article, we will look at the basic rules of the game, roulette numbers and payouts.

Roulette

How is roulette played?

Roulette is a popular casino game that involves a wheel with 37 numbers from 0 to 36. Half of the number spaces are black, the rest are red and the zero is green. When playing online roulette, the wheel is usually stationary until you make your bets. Then the wheel starts spinning in one direction and the ball in the opposite direction. The object of the game is to predict which number or colour the ball will end up in.

Basic rules of the game:

01
Wheel and numbers

The roulette wheel contains numbers from 1 to 36 and a zero (0). The numbers are randomly placed and alternate between black and red.

02
Bets

Players place bets on which number or group of numbers the ball will fall. You can place bets on individual numbers, groups of numbers, colours (red or black), even or odd numbers or number intervals (1-18 or 19-36).

03
Game process

The croupier spins the wheel in one direction and throws the ball in the opposite direction. Players can place bets until the croupier announces “No more bets”.

04
Result

When the ball lands on one of the numbers, all winning payouts are made according to the bets placed.

Numbers in Roulette

Almost everyone knows that there are 37 numbers in European roulette. This information is known even to those who are not very interested in the game. In American roulette, because of the extra double zero, there are 38 numbers. There is also a variant of roulette with 41 numbers, where zero and the numbers 1 to 40 are present more specialized topics, such as orphan numbers. Orphan numbers are numbers on the roulette wheel that do not belong to the main groups of numbers.

Types of Roulette

There are many variations of roulette, each with its own rules and characteristics. Knowing these options will help you choose the one that is best for you.

Main types of roulette:

European Roulette
  • Number of numbers: 37 (from 0 to 36).
  • Characteristics: A zero. This reduces the casino advantage to 2.7%, making the game more favorable to players compared to other variants.
American Roulette
  • Number of numbers: 38 (from 0 to 36, including 00).
  • Characteristics: Two zeros (0 and 00). This increases the house edge to 5.26%, making the game less favorable for players.
French Roulette
  • Number of numbers: 37 (from 0 to 36).
  • Characteristics: One zero. Special rules are used, such as “La Partage” or “En Prison”, which reduce the casino’s edge on even odds to 1.35%.
Mini Roulette
  • Number of numbers: 13 (from 0 to 12).
  • Characteristics: Fewer numbers on the wheel. The casino edge is higher, but the game offers a different, more dynamic experience.
Multi-Wheel Roulette
  • Characteristics: Players can place bets simultaneously on multiple roulette wheels. This increases the chances of winning and adds momentum to the game.
Live Dealer Roulette
  • Characteristics: The game is played live with a real dealer. This creates the atmosphere of a real casino and allows interaction with the dealer and other players in real time.
History of Roulette

Roulette was invented in the 17th century by the French mathematician Blaise Pascal during his experiments with the airwheel. The modern form of the game appeared in France in the late 18th century and quickly became popular among the aristocracy. In 1842, François and Louis Blanc added the zero to the wheel, creating French roulette. When the game arrived in the United States, the added double zero led to the creation of American Roulette. Today, roulette is one of the most well-known casino games, available in both land-based casinos and online casinos.
